Naomi Blake née Zissi Dum was born in 1924 in Mukacevo, Czechoslovakia. In April 1944 Naomi and her family were deported to Auschwitz, where many of her family were murdered. Sent to work in a munitions factory, she learned how to sabotage bombs and succeeded in escaping the Nazi death marches.
After the war, she moved to London and rebuilt her life. Her career as a sculptor flourished, and she used her work to promote understanding between faiths. Her sculptures can be found in synagogues, churches, cathedrals, hospitals as well as at LSJS.
Her story will be told by her daughter Anita Peleg using audio testimony by Naomi, historical photos and photos of Naomi’s sculpture that demonstrate the strength of the human spirit to survive against the odds and provide a positive legacy for the future. In honour of Naomi’s life, and to mark Yom HaShoah, in-person attendees will be able to see her sculpture, newly renovated at LSJS.
