Prof. Shalva Weil is Senior Researcher at the Seymour Fox School of Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she researches ethnicities, migration and femicide.
In 2021, Shalva Weil was a Visiting Scholar in the Faculty of History at Darwin College at the University of Cambridge, where she was researching the financial history of the Sassoon dynasty in India. In 2022, she became a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
She is editor of several books on India’s Jews, including India's Jewish Heritage (Marg, 2002 & 2009), Karmic Passages (OUP, 2008) (with David Shulman), Baghdadi Jews in India (Routledge, 2019), and The Jews of Goa (Primus, 2020). She has published over 120 articles, chapters in books, and encyclopedia entries on different aspects of Judaism in India.
Shalva Weil has been invited to lecture the world over on her areas of specialization. Examples include: the Universities of Stanford, Berkeley, UCSB (University of California in Santa Barbara) and Brandeis in the USA; SOAS and Warwick in the UK; Universities of South Africa (UNISA) and UCT (University of Capetown) in South Africa; Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco; University of Addis Abeba in Ethiopia; University of Yaounde, Cameroon; Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit at Kalady, Max Mueller Bhavan in Delhi, and the University of Mumbai in India. In 1995 she was invited to by the Prime Minister of India, Narahimsa Roa, to lecture at the Kovallam Symposium, with experts on India from 30 countries. In 2017, she was invited to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, as GIAN Distinguished Faculty on Indian Jews.
Shalva Weil is Founding Chairperson (with Zubin Mehta as President) of the first Israel-India Friendship Association, established in 1992 when diplomatic relations were set up between the two countries.
