LSJS hosts secondary schools conference participants from across Europe

Tuesday 28th May 2024

The London School of Jewish Studies held its annual conference for secondary school Jewish studies teachers and informal educators last Wednesday, with over 100 participants including those who had travelled from across Europe, including Gothenburg, Warsaw, Tallinn and Budapest.

Following a warm welcome from LSJS Chief Executive Joanne Greenaway, Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum gave the keynote address, saying that, “Just as we all look different, so we all think differently. Learning to respond sensitively and meaningfully to each individual that stands before us is vital to good teaching. By being alive to the questions of our students we will be able to better balance how and what we teach.”

“It was a real pleasure to host teachers from across the UK, together with twenty teachers working in European schools at our conference on Wednesday, said Danny Baigel, LSJS’ Secondary Programmes Manager and Jewish Career Pathways Director, who designed the conference. “It was a great opportunity to showcase the talented and dedicated professionals working in our schools and to spend time reflecting on priorities for our curriculum. The incredible buzz, networking and practical strategies shared, has given each educator food for thought and a renewed sense of purpose for their work in the classroom.”

The conference sessions covered inclusivity in the classroom, nurturing a love for learning as well as those on textual literacy and teaching Jewish texts. Participants also had the option to learn about wider community engagement, embedding Jewish values into pastoral support and prioritising and embedding ethos throughout school life.

“What a brilliant conference. It was so uplifting and humbling to spend time with fellow educators and hear their ideas and thoughts”, said Michael Lewis, Head of Jewish Studies, Immanuel College. “It is not often that one can look back and account for every moment of time being valuable, but the conference hours today were absolutely in that 'Cheshbon'.

LSJS Chief Executive Joanne Greenaway said, “It’s always so inspiring to meet our community of talented and dedicated teachers and there was a great group at this year’s conference - they deserve as much investment as possible.”

The conference was kindly sponsored by UnitEd and the Pincus Fund for Jewish Education.
