LSJS summer learning heats up

Tuesday 6th May 2025

As the days get longer and the temperatures warmer, this summer’s learning at the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) is more inspiring than ever.

The new term provides an exciting opportunity to study one of Rabbi Sacks’ most radical works. Future Tense examines the role of Israel and the Jewish people in the 21st Century, offering a profound rethinking of Jewish destiny in a modern, globalised world. In addition, a special pre-Shavout lecture will focus on the meaning and purpose of Torah learning, exploring why we learn, how we learn and the transformative power of learning itself.

The most prominent thought leaders from the Jewish world will come together for a timely and thought-provoking course. Visions for Israel’s Future addressing the major challenges and opportunities facing Israeli politics and society. They will examine the big ideas shaping Israel’s next chapter, from domestic policy to global Jewish relations.

The Chassidic Revolution will offer an in-depth exploration of one of the most transformative movements in Jewish history. Set against the backdrop of 18th Century European Jewish life, the course will trace how the rise of Chassidism reshaped Jewish self-understanding and spiritual life during a time deep turmoil and persecution.

Take a fresh look at Deuteronomy. Moshe’s Swansong will delve into the final speeches of Moshe Rabbeinu, uncovering the powerful, urgent messages he left for the Jewish people before his passing, messages that continue to resonate across generations.

“We’re excited to learn from world-class Israeli thinkers, such as Micah Goodman and Yossi Klein Halevi, who will be exploring Israel’s greatest societal challenges in our Visions for Israel’s Future course,” said Head of Adult Education, Michael Rainsbury. “Whether in our weekly Covenant & Continuity course developing Rabbi Sacks’ insights or through special events and tours, LSJS is the place to learn from the Jewish world’s highest calibre teachers, such as Rachel Sharansky Danziger, Rabbi Prof. Sam Lebens, Dr Yosefa Fogel Wruble, Rabbi Joseph Dweck and Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum.”

“We are also delighted to bring Dr Shaina Trapedo, an international Shakespeare expert from Yeshiva University, who will be our visiting scholar in residence. In immersive tours and lectures, she will reveal the myriad ways in which the Bible influenced Shakespeare and show its continuing impact on western society.”

There are more tours than ever this term, with the chance to visit the British Museum, the National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel, Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s Globe, the V&A and the streets of Westminster.

“We have a fantastic series of stimulating and thought-provoking courses and events coming up this summer; including a fascinating lecture on Unlocking the Torah’s Colour Code, which looks at how displaying the Torah in art unlocks beautiful patterns in its text,” said Joanne Greenaway, Chief Executive of LSJS. “As always, we have our Modern Jewish Literature and Unpacking Parasha courses as well as the advanced halacha learning Iyun programme for women. The term ends with a great opportunity to take your Ivrit skills to another level with our intensive two-week Summer Ulpan course.”
