It is intended to be an essential part of a teacher’s continuing development, enhancing both Jewish knowledge and critical skills around professional practice. The course is also relevant for rabbis and other Jewish educators.
The course is the product of a collaborative partnership between Birkbeck College, experienced UJIA educators and LSJS faculty.
Application and contact
Courses are open to Jewish educators who have a first degree. Exceptions may be made where candidates have a strong background in Jewish studies without a fi rst degree. (Please note, a heavily discounted fee tariff is available to full-time educators). This course is sponsored by UJIA.

Course structure and accreditation
The MA consists of four taught modules and one research essay of 12,000 to 15,000 words.
The four taught modules offered at LSJS are eachworth 30 credits:

Halachic Issues in Jewish Education – investigate the halachic roots of contemporary educational practice

Reflecting on Practice – develop an ability to understand your own workplace in an academic framework

Teaching and Learning Classical Texts – understand the issues involved in teaching and interpreting Jewish texts

The Contemporary Orthodox Classroom – investigate how different ideologies express themselves in Jewish pedagogy and issues such as teaching tefillah
Students may also have the option of taking a management and leadership module offered by Birkbeck instead of one the four modules listed above.
The research essay, worth 60 credits, can be a theoretical investigation or a piece of action research in your
own workplace.
Study times & term dates
1st term – start Sept 2010
All classes are taught in London at 5:00pm on a Monday and are repeated at 5:00pm on a Thursday.
Classes are also taught weekly in Manchester at 4pm on a Tuesday.
All London modules are taught at the LSJS campus in Hendon. The Manchester modules are taught at the King David School, Crumpsall, Manchester. |
