Jewish Guide to World Religions, (designed by LSJS’s Jewish Responsibility Unit), examines the history, beliefs and values of major world religions - from a Jewish point of view.

Over the year, the course addresses many fascinating topics including: notions of monotheism and messianism, forms of religious leadership, the role of sacred texts, the issue of proselytising and the rise of fundamentalism. It also looks at how good relations are being fostered between religions in order to create a cohesive society.

This course offers an indispensable Jewish guide to understanding the multi-cultural world in which we live:

·           1st term – study the beginnings and growth of Christianity and its institutions. Traditional Jewish texts from the Talmud to contemporary response will be employed to gain perspective

·           2nd term – study the origins and growth of Islam. Relevant Jewish writings from the medieval to modern period will be brought to gain a deeper understanding

·           3rd term – study Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Sikhism from a Jewish point of view and look at how different religions live side by side in the modern state of Israel

* Jewish Guide to World Religions was devised by Leonie Lewis and Dr Raphael Zarum with guidance from Dayan Ivan Binstock.

“Learning about world religions from a Jewish perspective is important for Jews living in Britian today. We should strive to live in mutual respect and understanding with other faith communities for the ennoblement of humanity, peace and justice.” (Dayan Ivan Binstock)
