The Mishnah is the foundation text of the Oral Law but is often under-appreciated. This course has been devised to teach you the structure and content of the Mishnah as well as giving you invaluable and sometimes surprising insights into its fine detailing of Jewish law or halacha. In just 26 weeks, you will cover enough ground to give you a panoramic view of the Mishnah’s great breadth and genius
Tractate by tractate, you will learn about the roots and key principles of halacha. From defining Shabbat, reciting the Shema, understanding shmittah, marriage, property, Temple, idolatry – and just about everything else you can think of.
Inside the Mishnah also examines how the Mishnah came to be written in the first place, as well as offering a fascinating window into Jewish life in Temple times.
Be challenged by the contradictory opinions that define the Mishnah and join the great debate of our Sages about how Jewish law should be lived, every day.
You will explore every tractate of the six sedarim or sections of the Mishnah:
· Zera’im - prayer and blessings, tithes and agricultural laws
· Mo’ed - the laws of the Sabbath and the Festivals
· Nashim - marriage and divorce, oaths and being a nazir
· Nezikin - civil and criminal law and the functioning of the courts
· Kodashim - sacrificial rites, the Temple and kashrut
· Tohorot - the laws of purity and impurity of death, food and the body
