Focusing on the raw power of the Book of Job, the sheer beauty of The Song of Songs and the meaning and eloquence of diverse translations of the Tanach, In-Depth Tanach will take you on an unforgettable journey. In addition, you will study the biblical text as well as ancient, medieval and modern commentaries and interpretations of it – gaining unique and often surprising insights into the fount of Jewish living.
In-Depth Tanach has been created to enable you to explore the Bible in a range of traditional and more modern ways and is an expansion of the popular Tanach in 29 Weeks. It will cover the following:
1st term – The Book of Job confronts head-on complex and profound philosophical questions such as how does God allow evil? You will gain fascinating insights into this book’s incredible humanity and study both rabbinic and modern literature that debate the great themes running through one of the Bible’s most challenging books.
2nd term – The Book of Isaiah
“They shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” (Isaiah 2:4)
Isaiah’s famous words adorn the walls of the United Nations building in New York and have spoken to the world through the ages. Who was this mysterious prophet of Israel and how has he affected Judaism and the world until today?
Taking a deeper look at this classic book, we will examine the history of Isaiah’s times, the key themes of the book, its superb poetry, and some of our classical commentators’ interpretations of the most difficult passages.
3rd term – The Song of Songs expresses in the most compelling and beautiful way the theme of love – love for God and love for humanity. It can be read and interpreted in many ways, offering ideas relating to our intimate relationship with the spiritual and physical worlds. Explore how the imagery that it describes evokes emotional responses and engage in a layered reading of this unique text that describes the nature of love.
