On this LSJS course you will come to learn about the fascinating personalities behind these inspiring works and explore their groundbreaking ideas.
Each term you will start by studying some of the great ‘Jewish narratives’, examining the way that biblical stories are interpreted in the midrash and by medieval and modern-day commentators. You will then turn to great ‘Jewish thoughts’, finding your way around the central texts, both contemporary and from the Middle Ages, which define Jewish philosophy.
Finally, you will get to grips with the great halachic works and trace the development of the Jewish legal system from Torah times.
On Great Jewish Books you will:
· Study Tanach together with Midrash Rabbah to reveal surprising insights into the biblical narrative
· Look at Maimonides and other key philosophers if you are still perplexed
· Delve into the deep questions posed by post-Holocaust literature
· Learn about the development of kabbalah, chasidut and Jewish philosophy
· Discover how to study the Mishnah and get to grips with how the Talmud is laid out
Please note that no previous experience of Jewish learning or Hebrew is required.
