MA Jewish Studies

Jewish Studies is a richly diverse field, covering a wide array of approaches and disciplines.



The MA Jewish Studies refl ects this diversity, offering you the chance to study with experts in a wide range of fields. You will be taught by faculty members from LSJS and King’s College London.

 

Application and contact

 

Candidates will normally have an undergraduate degree, preferably, but not necessarily, in a humanities subject. We will interview most applicants so that we can take your individual circumstances into account. Note: Late applications may be accepted, subject to availability of places. Additional modules may be offered in future years, and not all modules are offered every year.

King’s faculty members who currently offer modules on the LSJS pathway include Professor Ephraim Karsh, a leading Middle East expert, Dr Adam Sutcliffe, specialist in the history of early modern Europe; and Dr Andrea Schatz, lecturer in Jewish Studies at King’s who, together with Dr Diana Lipton, Lecturer in Hebrew Bible & Jewish Studies, co-ordinates the MA in Jewish Studies.

 

Course structure and accreditation

 

You will need to accumulate 180 credits to complete the degree:

 

Compulsory modules

 

·                Methods and Foundations in Jewish Studies – explore key ideas and methodological approaches in Jewish philosophy, halacha, and Jewish history. You will also develop your academic research skills. 20 credits

·               Dissertation (15,000 words) on a topic of your choice. 60 credits

 

Optional modules

 

You will select optional modules adding up to at least 100 credits. LSJS students on the MA Jewish Studies follow a special designated pathway through the optional degree modules.

 

You will be able to choose from the following modules:

 

·         Introductory Biblical Hebrew. 40 credits

·         Modern Hebrew. 40 credits

·         War & Peace in the Middle East. 20 credits

·         Ethics in Contemporary Jewish Philosophy. 20 credits

·         Post-Holocaust Jewish Thought. 20 credits

·         Gender & Sexuality in Jewish Law & Society. 20 credits

·         Jewish Social Ethics. 20 credits Selfhood, Sensibility and the Politics of Difference in the European Enlightenment. 20 credits

·        Interpreting Space and Time in Jewish London. 20 credits Jewish Perspectives on Religion, Culture and Public Space. 20 credits

·         A History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. 20 credits

 
 
Study times & term dates

 

1st term – start Sept 2010

 

Lectures will take place at the Strand Campus of King’s College, London, between 9:00am and 7:00pm. You can complete the degree in one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).
