About LSJS
Our Staff

Dr Raphael Zarum is Chief Executive and Head of Faculty. He is a graduate of the Jerusalem Fellows Programme at the Mandel Leadership Institute in Israel and has an MA in Adult Education from the Institute of Education in London. Raphael is the creator of the Torah L’Am crash course and is the author of Torat Hadracha and The Jampacked Bible. He led the faculty of the Florence Melton Adult Mini School UK while directing the Text and Values project at UJIA. Raphael also has a PhD in theoretical physics from King’s College London. He is a sought-after Jewish educator in the UK and teaches regularly at international Jewish conferences in Israel, the USA and Europe.
 
Dr Tamra Wright is Director of Academic Studies. She specialises in contemporary Jewish thought and is the author of The Twilight of Jewish Philosophy: Emmanuel Levinas’s Ethical Hermeneutics and specialises in contemporary Jewish thought. She is a Visiting Lecturer at King’s College London and Cambridge University and has taught at the London School of Economics and the University of Essex. She joined the academic staff of LSJS (then Jews’ College) in 1995 and was subsequently appointed to the Bradfield Lectureship in Jewish Studies. Dr Wright is also involved in adult Jewish education, having lectured extensively in the UK and abroad. She developed and leads the LSJS Susi Bradfield Women Educators’ Fellowships.
 

Maureen Kendler is Head of Educational Programming. She has a degree in English Literature from the University of Sussex and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She is an Ashdown Fellow and was names the Educator of the Year 2004 by the London Jewish Cultural Centre.  Maureen taught English at North London Collegiate School and has held posts as the Education Officer of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality, Head of Jewish Literacy at UJIA and Senior faculty member of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. Geoff Abrahams (Head of Operations)
 

Geoff qualified as an Electrical Engineer in 1976 and ran his own successful design and contracting company for 20 years. In 2002 he joined the United Synagogue Community Development Department where he put his 20+ years serving on synagogue Boards of Management to good use. During his time at the US he also served as its Health and Safety manager for which he is NEBOSH qualified.

He joined LSJS in January 2008. For relaxation he plays badminton and builds model railways. He is a grandfather and married with two children.

Gerry Shaer (Administrator) 
 
Gerry arrives at LSJS after her usual morning workout full of energy for the day ahead. As well as speaking French, she enjoys practising Spanish and is currently learning Ivrit.  In her spare time, she loves the theatre, playing bridge and cooking. 

 

Marilyn Katanka (PA to Raphael Zarum)
 
Marilyn graces LSJS with her smiling presence, ensuring that the office is running smoothly and our students are happy. She welcomes Israeli conversation as she is currently working on her Hebrew.
Jo Bruce (Women’s Programmes Co-ordinator)
 
Jo utilises all the skills she has developed bringing up and organising her kids. She co-ordinates our various women’s initiatives, from developing programmes to organising speakers. She is also ASDA’s best customer.
Erla Zimmels (Librarian)
 
Erla is a specialist in the field of Judaica and Hebraica and can help you with any and all enquiries.  She manages the extensive collection of the LSJS Library.  For more information, please click here.
 
Barry Payne (Full-time caretaker)
 
Barry keeps LSJS functioning and knows the detailed history of every room in the building. His car is perhaps the shiniest object ever seen in Hendon.
